I had heard some of Elvis's songs and seen the famous
clips of him on TV. But I never knew about his 'comeback' in the late
60s, until recently. His manager organized an intimate, informal TV
special in 1968 when, perhaps for the last time before he became an
unhealthy wreck, he really showed what it meant to be the King of rock
'n' roll. The entire special is worth watching, but this clip is a
particularly rousing one when he really gets into it, almost as if he's
surprised by the power he still wields over an audience (watch him when he shakes his guitar). It's from the
unedited version of the special, so it's more informal. Pay attention
to his facial expressions...This song is highlighted in Greil Marcus' outstanding book on American rock 'n' roll, Mystery Train.
